pyrric victory

A "pyrrhic victory" refers to a success or triumph achieved at an exceedingly high cost that renders the victory itself almost as damaging or burdensome as a loss. The term finds its origins in the ancient Greek general, Pyrrhus of Epirus, who won battles against the Romans but suffered such severe casualties that it weakened his own army to the point of ruin.
